Weathering the Storm

An independent research firm forecasts the recession’s effect on IT investment.

Though the current global recession has spared few sectors of the business world and wreaked havoc on many industries, IT investment had been expected to weather the storm better than most. Now, a brightening outlook isn’t expected until 2010, according to Forrester Research. How should organizations prepare for the long run? A recent Forrester report, “U.S. IT Market Outlook: Q1 2009,” illustrates trends and offers predictions and advice.

Plan again—from the beginning:

  • You must rethink everything.
  • If you’re global or plan to be, pursue global opportunities—with care.
  • If you’re in a position to be acquisitive, look hard for bargains—and be critical of valuation models.
  • Now is the time to be fiercely competitive—use your channel, partners, price if you can afford to.
  • Change your marketing mix—spend on analysis and measurement, and act quickly. Do your research.
